The
Collars

A collar frames you. And we find the frame as important as the picture. The most common type is the classic turnover collar, standing around the neck to be folded over. The standing collar is proudly fitting up around the neck, whereas a falling collar lies flat on the shoulders. The distance between the points, being the corners of the collar, is called the spread. It varies from narrow to extra wide, varying the appearance of the collar. Shape is essential. Traditionally, collars are stiffened with starch, but modern alternatives are interfacing or collar stays inserted into slits on the underside of the collar. Points can also be fixed by buttons. Modern collars may display patterns or contrast colors on the inside. A hidden secret when the shirt is buttoned. Fit of the collar is vital. For the collar to be neither ungainly nor tight ask the shop assistant for help measuring your neck. Take good care, iron reverse side only.
